Training Your Staff on New Restaurant Technology

    By Taren Martin | Blog | Comments are Closed | 4 March, 2025 | 0

You just got some shiny new restaurant technology—maybe a cutting-edge POS system, a fancy kitchen display, or powerful restaurant management software to help with all of your back-office needs!  Exciting, right? But what happens when your staff looks confused and seems overwhelmed by the new learning curve?

Training your team on new tech doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With the right approach, you can get everyone up to speed quickly (and maybe even have some fun doing it!). Here’s how.

          1. Show, Don’t Just Tell

Nobody wants to sit through a long PowerPoint presentation, and research has shown the most effective way people learn is by hands-on practice . Show your staff how the new system works in real time and let them practice using it right away.  The sooner they can get their hands on the technology, the sooner they will start learning.

Assign “tech champions” on your team—employees who can help answer questions and guide their coworkers through the transition.

          2. Keep It Bite-Sized

Avoid information overload! Break training into small, manageable sessions so employees can absorb the material without feeling overwhelmed. Focus on the most important functions first and build from there.  Allow room for questions and keep communication open so employees are not left confused and discouraged.

          3. Make It Interactive

Training can feel daunting and time consuming, so when it is possible, find a way to make it fun!  Turn training into a game by using role-playing, quizzes, or even a friendly competition to encourage staff to engage with the new technology. Prizes are always a great incentive and can be simple. The first team member to successfully complete a mock order without mistakes wins a free meal!

          4. Offer Ongoing Support

No one masters new technology overnight. Keep training materials easily accessible—whether it’s a quick-reference guide, video tutorials, or a chat group for questions. And don’t forget to be patient!  Have a “cheat sheet” near the workstation with step-by-step instructions for common tasks, and if you see a recurring question coming through, take a minute to review with everyone!

          5. Celebrate Small Wins

A little encouragement goes a long way. Recognize employees who pick up the new system quickly and support those who need extra time. The more confident your team feels, the smoother the transition will be!

Introducing new technology can feel like a lot, but with a little planning, patience, and a dash of creativity, your staff will be tech-savvy in no time. When investing in new technology, make sure they offer great customer service and tech support so managers have the best knowledge on how to utilize the technology to its fullest potential and can confidently train other staff to do the same!
