5 Interview Questions for Millennials & Gen Z

    By Taren Martin | Blog | Comments are Closed | 4 July, 2022 | 0

Millennials and Gen Z are known for being tech savvy, wanting to advance their careers and do work that matters.  If you have online applications, that’s a plus and any other technological advancements that would make the employee’s job run more smoothly is a great way to help sell them on choosing to work for you!  Here are 5 great questions to ask during an interview, especially to these two generations. These specific questions cater more to their era and can also tell you a lot about who they are and what they expect.

    • What is your ideal work environment?

Millennials and Gen Z are all about work culture.  Asking them what they expect or what their ideal work environment would be can tell a lot about if they will be a good fit for your company.  Asking this question also lets them know that you value your employees and the environment in which they work.

    • What are your goals within the company if you were to get this job?

These two generations are very interested in how they can move their way up in a job.   By asking this question, you can gauge what they are expecting to achieve while working for you, how long they are thinking they will stick around and can lay out realistic expectations regarding available promotions.  This will also tell the interviewee that you are interested in their future plans and are looking ahead to see if and how they fit into your long term plans.

    • Can you tell about a time when you had conflict with a manager or supervisor?

In a world of social media and less face-to-face interaction, emotional intelligence is said to be lower, especially for Gen Z.  They could answer this question in a way that points out how they made mistakes and learned how they can improve, or a more red flag answer would consist of them blaming the supervisor and speaking badly about them and not taking any fault.

    • What does hospitality mean to you?

An open ended question gives them a chance to fully speak their mind and can give you a better understanding of who they are and how they handle situations.  From this question, you can gather how they might treat customers and what kind of service they will bring to the table. If their definition of hospitality is far from what your idea of the word means, it might not be a great fit.

    • How do you like to receive feedback?

Hearing how someone likes to receive feedback can tell you a lot about them.  It can also give you a chance to see how this might positively or negatively affect how they interact with other employees or supervisors.  This can open a door for you to share challenges and some common trial and error happenings. This tells them that a learning curve is to be expected and feedback is likely to occur.

Both the interviewer and the interviewee can learn a lot from these interviews.  New generations have so much to bring to the table and you want to see what they can bring to your restaurant as well.  Next time you are re-evaluating your list of questions to use during an interview, consider adding these five!
