This year has already seen its fair share of natural disasters and hurricane season is now upon us. There is always the possibility of a natural disaster occuring. Depending on what part of the country you live in it might look a little different, but it is wise to always be prepared so your business is not caught off guard. If you do not have plans set in place, you are setting yourself up for some major losses that could potentially take your whole business under. Here are a few places you can start when preparing your business for a natural disaster.
Have a Plan
Having a plan in place before something happens will help you respond quickly and with more confidence. You will be able to communicate with your employees and set things in motion to ensure your business is as ready as it can be. Some natural disasters give you more time to prepare than others, so of course each plan will be a little different depending on the kind of disasters that could potentially occur in your area. Knowing at what point you will close your business is important and making sure you give employees enough time to get to a safe place as well. You also want to be sure you are managing your supplies. Sometimes you don’t need to be closed for very long and can continue serving guests, but you might not be able to get food for a while. Have a plan in place that will allow you to still serve customers, even if it means making a few changes to your menu for a short while. If you need to board windows or take any prior steps before the disaster, have a list of people who will be in charge of getting these tasks done and be sure you have a plan for important documents. A lot of data today is online which is a huge help in preserving vital information, but just be sure you have moved any important documents or valuables to a safe location.
Check Insurance
This particular point cannot be stressed enough! If a natural disaster hits your area, would you be covered by insurance? Again, depending on where you live the insurance policy might look a little different, but it is vital to review your insurance and ensure that you have the appropriate coverage for your business.
Train Staff
Training your employees on how to respond in an emergency and what is expected of them when a natural disaster hits will likely help to ease the panic and chaos. This can be covered during their initial training, but having periodic reviews with your staff is important. Periodic staff meetings throughout the year that briefly cover a plan of action in the event a natural disaster were to occur while they are on shift is always a good idea. Having an emergency plan printed and readily available to each work station will help keep your plan of action fresh in the minds of your staff so that if and when something should happen, they are prepared and can act accordingly.
Your business is important and so is taking care of the people who are in your establishment. Knowing who is responsible for what if the worst possible situation should occur can save you and your business a lot of emotional and financial expense and provide some peace of mind.
